Yee Hah! What a way to start the week! We had a great group this morning for our Boot Camp workout at the Corvallis High School Track. Lunges? Did someone say lunges? That was the theme this morning and we did lots and lots of functional fitness exercises combined with lunges up and down the field. Forward and reverse split lunges with overhead presses, curls, upper cuts, and even combined them with squat walks and stationary punches. The legs were burning but what a good burn! Everyone did a fantastic job this morning and the effort was visible on all of those smiling faces The temps were perfect at 55 degrees and it made for great workout weather. If you are interested in shaking up your workout routine and want to meet a great group of fun, non-judgemental, like minded folks that come on out and join us for one of our unique workouts. We utilize stairs, battle ropes, slosh pipes, Tabata intervals, hills, boulders, you name it and we incorporate it into our workouts. For more info simply send Shandra an email or give her a call at (541) 207-8526. Be sure to check out our weekly location meeting page to see where we will be for our workouts!

Wow! What a great week of Fitness Boot Camps! We got in our workouts at the Corvallis High School track, the hills of 29th street, downtown Corvallis waterfront, Oregon State University parking garage stairs, and the stairs of Reser Stadium. We really got the quads burning this week and everyone did a terrific job. Our interval training of sprints, loaded leg exercises, stairs, hill repeats, and dumbbell/resistance band training gave us more than complete all body training over the past five days. Great job everyone!

I am so proud of our Big Climb team members for their fund raising efforts with a month left before the big event. We have more than doubled our fund raising goal which is just phenomenal. What a great feeling to be raising money for such a worthy cause while getting fit, strong, and healthy!

As our Big Climb team continues to prepare for the event in Seattle next month we continue to introduce stair climbing techniques to our team and our Boot Camp participants. Here are a few suggestions to think about while training on stairs:

While climbing try to take two steps at a time and single step when you tire to aide recovery.

Try to push through your heel as often as possible.

Use the handrail: This can be done in several different fashions such as hand over hand (like rope climbing), one hand only, or if the stairwell is narrow you may be able to use your right and left hand on opposing rails.

Pace yourself! Do not take off at a sprint to get a big jump on your time as this typically results in tiring sooner and loss of time later in your climb.

Muscle soreness does not typically develop from climbing stairs. It comes from descending stairs so do this as little as possible. In other words, if you are training in a building, when you reach the top take the elevator back down instead of returning through the stairway to the ground floor. If you must descend the stairs then alter your pattern by going on diagonals, etc.

Excellent exercises to aide you are lunges so make certain to implement them into your training program.

A strong core is essential to your success so make sure you keep up with your Planks and Mountain Climbers.

You can avoid the common phenomenon of “climbers hack” by breathing through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. The “hack” develops from breathing hard through your mouth for an extended period of time when your heart rate is at increased levels.

If you are not currently on our stair climb team or in our Boot Camp feel free to contact Shandra or drop in during one of our morning or evening sessions! We would love to have you as part of our group.
